University of Louisiana at Lafayette Music Theory Diagnostic Exam
The UL Lafayette Theory Diagnostic Exam is administered online via UTheory. Once accepted into the School of Music and Performing Arts, request access to the exam here. Ideally, complete the exam before registering for your first semester as a music major or minor. It is required by the end of the first week of classes.
The exam takes about 90 minutes and can be retaken up to 3 times, with the highest score used for placement. It's a diagnostic tool to help you enroll in the appropriate music theory course.
AP Credit for Music Theory
A score of 3 on the AP Music Theory Exam earns credit for MUS 120 (Music Theory I), and a score of 4 or 5 earns credit for both MUS 120 and MUS 130 (Music Theory I & II). Ensure your test scores are reported to UL Lafayette’s registrar for credit.
